The September Planning Docket

This blog is intended to provide insight into Alexandria’s planning process, and key planning issues the city faces from my perspective as a Planning Commission member. Through this forum, I hope to provide context for issues we face that shape the urban form of our city.

The views expressed are mine alone, and do not represent the City of Alexandria, the Alexandria Planning Commission, or my employer.

As September begins, the Planning Commission begins Fiscal Year 2019 with a large slate of cases on the Tuesday, September 4, 2018 docket. Several new restaurants are seeking special use permits to enhance their operations, including a new location for Misha’s at 6 Prince Street, Charlie’s on the Avenue at 1501 Mt. Vernon Avenue, Augie’s Mussel House at 1106 King Street, Urbano 116 at 116 King Street, and the 219 King Street restaurant.

One of the most significant actions the Planning Commission takes is enactment of small area plans, which are a component of the city’s Master Plan. This month, the commission will consider the Route 1 South Housing Affordability Strategy, which seeks to preserve affordable housing in Old Town’s Southeast Quadrant, as well as encourage redevelopment of commercial sites on South Patrick Street to create a more welcoming gateway to the city.

Another important case is redevelopment of 1200 North Henry Street, which would provide an architectural landmark at the north end of the Braddock Neighborhood. The development designates 10,000 square feet for a daycare center and includes 11 affordable units (out of 115 total). The development would also incorporate ground-floor retail.

The meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. at Alexandria City Hall, 301 King Street. Most cases considered by the Planning Commission will be heard by City Council at its September 15 public hearing.
